Apologies for not updating my blog, but there has been so much going on.
Yesterday, I was contacted to say that Silverback Publishing will be going ahead with their new music magazine, ‘Blitzed’, and that they want me to head it up as their editor in chief. Of course, I’ve kept this under my hat until I knew officially that Silverback wanted to go ahead with it, but now they do, I can spill the beans!
BLITZED MAGAZINE will be a retro 80s style magazine, written like a posh Smash Hits, geared towards a readership who were 80s TEENAGERS, and maybe, their children might even read it too! We are hoping to launch the new magazine in three to four months if planning goes well. The publishers already market, and sell four magazines through WHSmith, and online, so BLITZED will be sold in a similar format, worldwide eventually; physically and online. Readers will also have the opportunity to take out SUBSCRIPTIONS. We are launching it as a bi-monthly magazine at first until we see how sales go.
The magazine will not only be for commercial readers, but we want it to organically grow its readership. The publisher and I are in the process of planning what regular features we want to include, but ultimately we want to include a featured artist in every edition, and on the cover, so that as well as discussing back catalogue work, we can include up and coming projects, new albums, tours etc. For example, we could do a Soft Cell special to feature Marc and Dave on the cover, with features and interviews on their latest album and possible tour; another month we could feature Paul Weller and his new work; Duran Duran another issue etc.
With that in mind, if you have any connections with any 80s bands/musicians who would consider or like to be featured in BLITZED for a nominal fee to help us launch the first few issues, please do message me.
My ideas are as follows: I will do the main cover artists features and interviews, and I will have other contributors do column content. I am hoping to make the articles interview-led, but also situation-dependent, which will make them easier, and fun to write. For example: ‘In the studio with Soft Cell’, In Rehearsal with Duran Duran’, ‘Down the pub with…’ That way, it’s the event as well as the interview and will give us great photographs that go with the piece.
I’ll have an ‘Editors opening’, written by me. The magazine would have a front-page lead piece which would also be written by me. I want to have a main artist feature, with them on the cover, and perhaps a pull out centrefold of them, (old school), or a poster inside, as Smash Hits sometimes did, or even a Flexi-disc – remember those?
I’m looking to include a column with a social/80s specialist historian who can commentate on aspects of the 80s. (I think I’ve found them). An agony column where readers can email in their 80s issues, ask about bands, music, fashion etc and have them answered. (I have someone in mind as the agony aunt, so if you’d like to send in your questions to submit for inclusion, and to be answered, please get in touch).
I’d like a section on gigs featuring 80s bands. Gigs then, and fans experiences and reviews of gigs now, including their own photographs, which they can email me to be included. Stories of fans meeting their idols, and their experiences both in the crowds, and even backstage. Selfies with the stars, section.
I also plan to have a review section on old classic albums, and artists’ latest releases. A fun column to include would be ‘misheard lyrics’, with readers’ interactions.
I’d also like to include a page or two such as ‘What we wore, and how we wore it.’ To include pictures, trends, magazine cuttings, and perhaps even the odd interview from beloved 80s fashion designers such as Vivienne Westwood on her 1981 Pirate Collection, or the craze of string vests, The New Romantics, or the MADONNA look.
We’d have a targeted advertising section which music companies/product companies could pay to be included in, in terms of albums, downloads, fashion and lifestyle. I’d also like to include a really amazing giveaway for readers who SUBSCRIBE to the magazine. Ultimately, I have lots of wonderful ideas for the publication, but my main vision is to bring the best of the 80s alive again, and also bring up to date news on artists who are still contributing to the music industry, specifically for their fans.
Lastly. There would be…Phillipa’s final thoughts on the issue…
If any record companies, artists’ management, or musicians themselves want to contribute in terms of items to include in subscription giveaways, or be featured or interviewed, or perhaps be on the front cover, then please do get in touch. I want the magazine to be as organic, and reader lead as possible, so if you are reading this and what to be involved, please do get in touch. I’m so excited to get started!
